If you go through the sea road from Daecheon Port for about 30 minutes, you will reach a place called Jeodu, which is the entrance to Wonsan-do. The name was given because the topography of the village resembles a wild boar, and it is named as a fishing spot for seashore rocks. It is Seonchon about 10 minutes from Jeodu, the largest village in Wonsan-do.
The shape of the island extends long in the east-west direction, and Orobong Peak, where the site of Bonghwadae Peak was located on the west side of the island.
The old name of Wonsan-do was Gomando, but it was given the name Wonsan-do because of its high mountains and hilly hills. Wonsan-do is the second largest island in Chungnam after Anmyeon-do.
Wonsan-do Island has gained fame early as a resort and is a place where tourists are constantly visiting.
In particular, Wonsan-do Beach is a place where people who visit once have visited due to its fine sand quality, gentle slope, clean water quality and adequate water temperature. Village buses are running from Seonchang Pier to the beach. After passing through small hills, small dharang paddy fields, and fields, you will meet the white sandy beach. It is a large white sand beach that cannot be seen as a beach on the island. The sand particles made of silica sand are full of flour.
Wonsan-do Beach is a southern-facing beach that is hard to find anywhere in the West Sea, so it has excellent conditions for enjoying the beach due to the low influence of the tide. There are many white sand beaches lined up around the beach, and it is said that the length of the entire island is 70 li, wrapped like a white band. In one summer, the beach is quite busy with more than 100,000 vacationers. However, if you want to enjoy a quiet vacation, you can quickly find a small white sand beach even if you are away from the beach. You can feel as if you are monopolizing the white sand alone.
At the end of the white sand beach, rocks rise, and if you dip fishing here, you can catch sea urchins, rockfish, and flesh-like sea bream. It is also fun to catch sea urchins crawling through the cracks of the rock, and you can easily catch various clams with just a little passing through the white sand.
Accommodation facilities mainly depend on guest houses, but campers can enjoy camping at the campsite. There is no difficulty in drinking water that is common on the island because a cool spring called Chansam springs up on the beach.
Wonsan-do is preparing a large-scale development plan. Accommodation facilities are expected to include condominiums, family hotels, youth hostels, rental villas, and inns. In addition, the entire island, including a seawater pool, waterskiing, motorboat, jet ski, and windsurfing, will be built as a marine sports complex. There will be a multi-purpose playground, tennis court, cycling course, and mental and physical training ground. In addition, a walking trail will be connected between pine forest and white sand beach, and an observation deck will be built.
The specialties of Wonsan-do include sand lance sauce, Wonsan-do laver, and chives.
A significant amount of fish sauce is produced in Wonsan-do as a special product of Boryeong. The fish sauce refers to anchovies of between 15 cm and less than 25 cm. The fish sauce caught off the coast of Wonsan-do is pickled with sea salt without mixing any processed foods, and stored at room temperature for one year to make stir-fry. In particular, the fish sauce from Wonsan-do is sweet and has a light aftertaste, so even the fish sauce that uses the name of the place is appearing. You can buy real fish sauce at an affordable price in the country of origin.
Laver is also an indispensable specialty of the country. Just as the fixed laver in Gojeong-ri, Jupo-myeon, gained national fame, laver from the country is also excellent in taste and quality. It brings out its unique natural taste without adding condiments to the laver farmed in clean seas.
Chives are a special product grown at the Wonsan 1-ri demonstration complex and are thick and delicious like garlic.
From Daecheon Port to Seonchon, Wonsan-do, three ferries are operated a day, and the number of ferries is increased from time to time during the holiday season.
