Introduction to Nampo Hyanggyo

Hyanggyo is an educational institution established by the country for the education and edification of local residents and performing rites to Confucius and various saints. Nampo Hyanggyo was first built in Daecheon-ri, Ungcheon-myeon, in the 13th year of King Taejong's reign (1413). It was moved to its current location in the 25th year of King Jungjong (1530), and the scale of Daeseongjeon was extensively repaired. The remaining buildings include Daesungjeon Hall, Myeongnyundang Hall, Oesammun Gate, Inner Sammun Gate, Dongjae, and Seojae. Daeseongjeon Hall is a ritual space with 3 bays in the front and 2 bays in the side. The roof is decorated with a hipped-and-gabled roof in the shape of eight arms from the side. Myeongnyundang is an auditorium where students gather and study, and the roof is a hipped-and-gabled roof. The size is 5 bays in the front and 2 bays in the side, and 3 bays in the middle have a floor and ondol rooms are placed on both bays. The overall arrangement is in the form of a former Confucian scholar with an educational space in the back and an educational space in the front. In the Daeseongjeon Hall, memorial tablets of Chinese and Korean saints, including Confucius, are enshrined. During the Joseon Dynasty, the country taught students with land, slaves, and books, but now the educational function has disappeared and only the ritual function remains.

Introduction to Nampo Eupseong Fortress

A 邑 castle is a castle that protects the residents of a county or county and serves both military and administrative functions. Nampo Eupseong is a castle made of stones in a hill at the western end of the Charyeong Mountains, and Nampo was also called Sapohyeon during the Baekje period. This castle was originally built during the reign of King Wu of the Goryeo Dynasty to prevent Japanese pirates from invading the west coast, but it was completed by adding a camp where the army could stay in the 2nd year of King Gongyang (1390). The walls of the castle remain relatively well, with the outer walls stacked at right angles using stones, and the inside of the castle walls stacked with soil.
The Ongseong Fortress, another wall placed outside the castle at a height of 4 m to protect the gate, was constructed from a large stone over 1 m in the three East, West, and South locations. In the area where the wall is bent, some of the walls are stacked to protrude so that you can quickly observe the enemy's approach, and several facilities are installed to hide themselves on both walls and attack them. In the castle, three government buildings, Jinseoru, Naesammun (Oksanammun), and Oedongheon, are preserved, and drainage facilities are installed at a height of 80 cm from the east and west. Records show that there were three wells. This town is considered to have played a role in protecting and monitoring maritime traffic while guarding the Japanese pirates as a key point on the west coast.

Nampo Gwanamun (gate)

Introduction to the Nampogwan Gate

It is a government-affiliated building in Nampo-hyeon during the Joseon Dynasty and consists of Jinseoru, Naesammun, and Oedongheon. Jinseoru is a two-story gate tower built on a low stylobate, with three bays in front and two bays in side, and a hipped-and-gabled roof house with eight bays in the shape of a 八 on the side. The lower floor has three doors, and the second floor has a numaru and a railing on four sides. Naesammun, the door to Dongheon, is a building with seven bays in the front and one bays in the side. One in the center is a door with a large gate, while the other bays are decorated with rooms. The central compartment is a gabled roof with a human-shaped side and the left and right rooms have eight bays in the shape of a 八. Oedongheon, which used to work for Nampo-hyeon, is a grand hall with seven bays in the front and three bays in the side. There is a two-room daecheong in the center of the front and an ondol room on the left and right.

The Tomb of General Jwa-Jin Kim

Introducing General Kim Jwa-jin's Tomb

It is the tomb of independence activist General Kim Jwa-jin (1889-1930), a white 冶. Born to a wealthy farmhouse in Hongseong, the general had a strong idea of enlightenment, and at the age of 15, he burned the slave documents of his family and distributed rice fields. In addition, he established the Ho Myung School in 1907 to take the lead in eradicating illiteracy. In 1911, he raised military funds and served in prison for two and a half years. After moving to Manchuria in 1917 and joining the Korean Liberation Corps, he became the commander of the Northern military administration and trained the independence army, and based on this, he fought against Japan in Cheongsan-ri, achieving the greatest victory in the history of the independence movement. In 1930, the general who tried to restore his country, was assassinated by communist Park Sang-sil. Shortly after the assassination, he was buried in Manchuria, and in 1940, his wife Oh Sook-geun disguised the general's remains as a secret box and buried them in Iho-ri, Seobu-myeon, Hongseong-gun. After that, when his wife passed away in 1957, his son Kim Doo-han joined forces in his current location.
Currently, a fence is installed in the back of the tomb, and the tomb is surrounded by a round stone at the bottom. In front of the tomb, there is a 燈 and a stone lantern (a stone lantern in front of the tomb), a tombstone is next to it, and a pair of horse stone statues are erected on the left and right.

Boryung Suburi Guibu and Yi Su

Introduction of Boryeong Suburi Gwibu and Issu

It is a rain standing in the Yeongsuam (formerly Danwonsa Temple) compound, and it was collected and moved here from a nearby temple. On the turtle-shaped pedestal, only the headstone was placed with the body lost. The turtle pedestal has a dragon-shaped head, ears and horns engraved, and the beard under the chin was carved up to the neck. The back was carved with a honeycomb-shaped hexagon, and a lotus flower was decorated around the groove where the body was placed. The headstone is filled with dragons and cloud patterns, and a framed space is placed in the center of the front and divided into 十 shapes, but the letters are not written. It appears to be a work of the Goryeo Dynasty in terms of its colorful and sophisticated sculpture style.

Galmaemot Catholic Shrine

Introduction of the Catholic Martyrdom Site in Boryeong

Galmaemot Shrine is a holy site where five saints, including three priests of the French Revolution, were martyred in 1866, when Catholic persecution was at its peak, and in 1925, Father Choi Mal-gu and others confirmed the martyrdom site through testimony from villagers and purchased 20 pyeong of fatality site, laying the foundation for the development of the sacred site. Since then, the holy site of Galmaemot has also been renovated as it has attracted global attention due to the martyrs' welfare (1968) and the saint's quality (1984), and the current holy site of Galmaemot is built on about 5,500 pyeong of land, with a nationwide reputation of martyrs, memorials, priests, and convents visited by about 4 to 50,000 pilgrims a year. It is a historic site linked to the historic nature of Chungcheong Suyeong (營) and has been designated as a monument of the province.
